Synopsis
Montevideo, 1971. As restrictions on slaughter and meat consumption force the trade underground, Galician immigrant José and his daughter Rosita begin operating a clandestine slaughterhouse. What starts as an act of survival soon grows into a profitable contraband network, drawing them into a dangerous world of rival butchers, corrupt officials and an increasingly repressive state. Amid Uruguay’s economic and social crisis of the late 1960s, the government imposed the Veda de Carne to protect beef exports. The restrictions drove the meat trade underground and exposed a wider conflict over power and national resources. In 1973, democracy collapsed under military rule and was not restored until 1985
