A WHOLE LIFE
Synopsis
At the turn of the 20th century, a young orphan named Andreas Egger is sent to a valley where he will spend most of his life. He is raised by his uncle, a hill farmer who shows Andreas very little affection and uses him as cheap labour. At 18, he leaves the farm to work as a woodsman for the construction of a ropeway. He does not mind the hard labour, as he is earning his own money for the first time. This allows him to lease a small plot of land with a cabin, high in the mountains. Shortly after, Andreas meets Marie who is the love of his life. However, this romance is fleeting as dramatic events take her out of his life. Although there have been moments of sadness in his life, Andreas can look back on his life as an old man with wonder and no regrets.
Press Quotes
(Sunday Times - about the novel)
“A WHOLE LIFE is one of those stripped-down everyman stories that is transparently, self-consciously about Much More: The encroachment of modernity, the universal nature of love and heartbreak, the quickness of our passage through life”
