A Stolen Life - The Destiny of Martha Liebermann

Synopsis

Martha’s choice as a Jew is either exile or wait for the deportation train to a concentration camp. Frau Liebermann’s high societal standing and her famous late husband Max’s reputation as beloved and renowned artist protect her for a while. But for how long? Since she bends to neither pressure nor blackmail from corrupt and thuggish officials, she has made herself an even bigger target for punishment. Martha realizes her situation dangerously late, blinded by her total disbelief of the situation. But the clock is ticking. A group of women joined in resistance around Hanna Solf sees what Martha doesn’t and eventually push Martha to sell pieces of her art collection to finance her flight to freedom – a highly costly matter at that time in Berlin 1943. This is the ultimate chance for Gestapo Detective Inspector Rudolf Teubner to set a trap for the long sought after group of resistance fighters, the Solf-circle. Who is friend, who is the enemy? The situation gets even more tricky when Martha sees her loyal housekeeper Luise in fear for her life, prompting another important decision along a dangerous road hoping for freedom.

Press Quotes

An introspective, gritty, and filmic missing piece of feminist courage during NAZI Europe’s occupation. The characters are true and their portrayals unglorified to level equally as true. Subtly powerful for its tension and historically accurate locations. Winner of the Golden Nymph at Monaco Film Festival for Best Film and Best Actress. Starring an A-list German cast from the small and large screen.
