(Les Inrockuptibles) “Enfant terrible”- The surprising trailer for the biopic on Rainer Werner Fassbinder

By: Pink baldous

He was due to premiere at Cannes this year. Enfant Terrible, the biopic about the famous German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, directed by Oskar Roehler, offers a first trailer.

Enfant Terrible was to debut at the Cannes Film Festival this year, before a release in Germany. However, following the cancellation of the festival in its usual form, not sure that the film is part of the official selection of this atypical edition, which will be revealed this Wednesday, June 3.While waiting for the verdict, the biopic of Oskar Roehler (who had adapted the Elementary Particles in 2006) still offers a trailer for the least surprising. Oliver Masucci (from the Dark series) plays the legendary German film director in fictitious settings. A film which therefore promises experimental impulses, punctuated by sequence shots and false connections, to better penetrate the psyche of its protagonist.

The film will follow the life and career of Fassbinder, focusing mainly on the period of the 1970s when the filmmaker, obsessed with the idea of making masterpieces, had only one idea in mind: to become the one of the greatest living directors. Of course, moviegoers know the tragic end of the story since Fassbinder died of an overdose     at the age of 37. The mark he left on the film industry remains indelible, however. Self-taught artist, seasoned perfectionist, Fassbinder has not ceased to portray the political and social divides of his country, with a cinema denouncing different relationships of domination. A business at work in Petra von Kant's Bitter Tears (1972), Tous les autres s' (1974) or     The Marriage of Maria Braun (1978).

A unique filmmaker

The filmmaker was only active during this short period, but was nevertheless very prolific since he directed more than 40 feature films, as well as a number of television series and short films. “Bavaria Filmproduktion is proud to present two of the greatest icons of German cinema in a film: Rainer Werner Fassbinder, whose work remains influential for filmmakers around the world, and Oskar Roehler, one of the most inventive talents in cinema and of the writing this country has ever known, ” said producer Markus Zimmer. “Enfant Terrible is both a tribute and an analysis of a maniacal director, visually stunning and full of amazing performances, Oliver Masucci at the head,” he added.

The cast also includes Katja Riemann, Erdal Yildiz, Eva Mattes, Antoine Monot Jr, Götz Otto and Alexander Scheer. The film is currently still looking for international distribution.
