(Cineuropa) Picture Tree International picks up André Erkau’s God You’re Such a Prick

by Davide Abbatescianni

Berlin-based sales outfit Picture Tree International has picked up the international rights to André Erkau’s family drama God You’re Such a Prick. The director’s latest cinematic endeavour was Happy Burnout (2016), a comedy revolving around an unemployed man diagnosed with burn-out syndrome, and starring Torben Liebrecht, Kostja Ullmann and Anke Engelke in the lead roles. The news about Picture Tree International’s acquisition was first reported by Variety.

The script of God You’re Such a Prick, penned by Tommy Wosch and Katja Kittendorf, centres on a 16-year-old girl called Stefanie (Sinje Irslinger), whose world is turned upside down when she finds out she has terminal cancer right before a school graduation trip to Paris. When Stefanie’s parents (Til Schweiger and Heike Makatsch) decide that she should stay home instead, she runs away with a young motorcycle daredevil (Max Hubacher), who promises to take her to the French capital. Driven by deep longing and a lust for life, Stefanie learns that it is easier to let go of life when you have truly loved it. The plot is based on the true story of Stefanie Pape and the book of the same name written by her father, Frank.

Other confirmed members of the main cast include Jürgen Vogel, Benno Fürmann, Jasmin Gerat, Dietmar Bär and Inka Friedrich. The film was shot last year on location in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and France, and is currently in post-production.

God You’re Such a Prick is being produced by Germany’s UFA Fiction in co-operation with broadcaster RTL. Leonine is planning to release the drama in Germany on 15 October, whilst Picture Tree International intends to hold a virtual premiere of the movie during Cannes’ Marché du Film. Nonetheless, these plans may be subject to change, owing to the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 outbreak.
